The question of whether you need to use sand for artificial grass or not has been debated in the industry in the last decades.
Historically, artificial grass was developed to be used on sports fields. Later, since it was thought to be useful in landscaping, it has started to be used in this area as well.
Although it is a matter of preference, we recommend silica sand if you want your lawn to be suitable, steeper and more stable on the floor.
Silica sand is different from regular sand, it contains 95% SiO2 (silicon dioxide) and less than 0.6% iron oxide. It is added to artificial grass as an infill and gives a natural feel very much like soil. Also it provides even more comfort in use.
Sand of Artificial grass almost always needs infill – a sand-like material that goes between the blades, helping the blades stand upright and preventing wrinkling over time. Silica sand is one of the most ubiquitous forms of infill for the simple reason that it’s inexpensive.
There are several benefits to using sand fill.
- Silica sand gives weight to artificial turf. Extra weight provides artificial grass to be kept more stable to the floor.
- The sand provides stability and protects the turf. As a result, no wrinkles or folds develop through use.
- An additional benefit of filling with sand is that it helps make the grass more fire resistant since sand is fire retardant.
- It gives the artificial grass a natural feel under feet as it provides additional softness, similar to soil in natural grass.
- Another benefit to install a silica sand infill is for drainage.
- Silica sand does not encourage the germination of weeds.
**On the back of the artificial grass, there are drainage holes that will allow rain to flow through your artificial grass , and the silica sand acts as a filter, slowing the flow of water through your turf. This will make it easier for the subfloor to cope with heavy rainfall without causing flooding.
